Large Chilled Water Systems

Large chilled-water systems with six or more chillers (Figure below) have different challenges than smaller systems. Examples of these types of systems are commonly found on campuses with multiple buildings, downtown districts, and mixed-use residential and commercial developments.

Mid Sized Chilled Water Systems

In addition to the design decisions faced by the small chilled-water system designer, the following objectives may be encountered by the mid-sized system designer.

Small Chilled-Water Systems

A common design goal for the small chilled-water system with one or two chillers (Figure below) is to minimize complexity while balancing energy consumption goals. Smaller chilled-water systems may have smaller budgets allotted for operation and maintenance and may run unattended more often than larger systems. Keeping it simple, while capitalizing on chilled water advantages, is the hallmark of a successful project.

Chiller Plant Control

It is important to understand that no matter how good the system design is, adequate controls are necessary for all the components to operate properly as a system. It is equally important to understand that you cannot “control your way out of a bad system design.

Ice Storage Systems

Thermal energy storage (TES) involves adding heat (thermal) energy to a storage medium, and then removing it from that medium for use at some other time. This may involve storing thermal energy at high temperatures (heat storage) or at low temperatures (cool storage).

This is a five series of publications comprising the Emerson Climate Technologies, Inc. Refrigeration Manual. Although each separate part covers a specific area of refrigeration theory and practice, each successive publication presumes a basic understanding of the material presented in the previous sections.

Major Hvac Systems and Equipment

A comprehensive list of all the major HVAC system types and related equipment

Hvac System Components

Refrigeration and HVAC Systems and Equipment components help system designers and operators to select and use equipment that is the best fit for a particular application or controlling scenario.

Piping Tools (Excel Files)

More than 165 spreadsheets (excel xls files) for a comprehensive range of calculation in Fluid, Thermal and piping engineering.

Relief Valve Calculations And Equations

Pressure relief devices (PRD’s) are widely and effectively used to protect process equipment such as piping systems, pressure vessels, distillation columns and other equipment from pressures exceeding the design-pressure rating by more than a fixed predetermined amount. The aim of pressure relief valves is to prevent damage to equipment, prevent injury to personnel and to avoid potential risks to the environment.

Pipe Schedules Tables

Pipe Schedule (SCH) is a standard that measures the nominal wall thickness of a pipe. The pipe schedule number is non-dimensional and depends on the nominal pipe size, internal pipe working pressure, and the material used for the pipe wall.

Valve Sizing And Actuator Selection

In this guide, you will be provided with the 18 steps on how to properly size and select valves, actuators and assemblies.

Valve Characteristics

Why do we need to be aware of the valve characteristics?
Every component in a hydronic system has some level of influence on the control and performance of a hydronic system. Valves are key because they are the controlling devices at the critical areas of heat transfer.

Hvac Career Opportunities

The HVAC/R (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning / refrigeration) industry is rapidly changing due to advancements in technology being spurred on by the need for increased energy efficiencies.
Accordingly, the career opportunities open to an individual seeking employment in HVAC fields can be divided roughly into four categories, each dependent upon a different type or degree of education and/or training.

The Commissioning Process

commissioning process – a quality oriented process for achieving, verifying, and documenting that the performance of facilities, systems, and assemblies meets the defined objectives and criteria.

Hvac Connection Details

These details will show all of the required ductwork and piping connections, as well as support requirements and miscellaneous appurtenances such as thermometers, pressure gauges, and flexible pipe connectors.

Ductwork Air Flow Balancing

Balancing air systems (ductwork) may be accomplished in various ways. The most common method to accomplish ductwork balancing is Proportional Method. Each diffuser is adjusted to supply the right percentage of total air volume in the ductwork.

Heat Transfer Textbook Download

The book is meant for juniors, seniors, and first-year graduate students. And to those who choose to learn the subject on their own, and to practicing engineers who use it as a reference. Whether one studies alone or with a class, learning means posing, then answering, one’s own questions.

Expansion Valves

the expansion valve is used to control the flow of refrigerant from the high-pressure condensing side of the system into the low-pressure evaporator. In most cases, the pressure reduction is achieved through a variable flow orifice, either modulating or two-position. Expansion valves may be classified according to the method of control.

Mcquay Softwares

McQuay (As part of Daikin Industries) is one of the largest air conditioning, heating, ventilating and refrigeration companies in the HVAC/R industry. Therefore, we decided to make some softwares that this company has introduced to the industry based on their experience and knowledge available for download.

Furnace Maitenance And Repairs

Modern furnaces, especially high efficiency models, are more complicated than models from decades ago. The efficiency gains are due in large part to the careful balancing of fuel, combustion air, and exhaust gasses. Furnace Maitenance And Repairs. Furance And Homeowners Inspection. The Dangers Of CO. Fans: The First Line Of Cooling

Fans, Just as with windchill in the winter, moving air will quickly reduce our skin temperature, especially when the evaporation of perspiration is included. Even homes that use air conditioning can benefit from the use of fans. Cooling our bodies with a fan means we can turn up the temperature for the air conditioner, and save energy overall. Different type of fans: Portable Fans, Box Or Window Fans, Ceiling Fans, Whole-House Fans, Attic Fans.

Air Conditioner Repaires And Maintenance

A central air system uses the same ductwork, fan, and controls as the forced-air furnace, so some of the maintenance requirements are the same. Test, adjust and balancing.

Balanced Ventilation

Air Exchangers exchange stale indoor air with fresh air from the outside. Heat recovery ventilation (HRV) is a system that exhausts air from inside of a home and replaces it with outdoor air. Energy recovery ventilation (ERV) is a system that does everything that an HRV does with the addition of transferring moisture from the exhausted air into the air entering the home and restricting moisture from incoming air. Maintenance of Ventilation Systems

Electric Heating Systems

is any process in which electrical energy is converted to heat, including resistance and radiant electric systems. Electric Heating Systems are: Baseboard Convectors, Electric Furnaces, Electric Plenum Heaters, Radiant Electric Heating. Electric Heating Repairs and Maintenance

Boiler Repair And Maintenance

Boiler Repair and Maintenance, Boilers should be inspected on an annual basis and adjusted as needed to meet the manufacturer’s specifications in order to maintain both efficiency and safety. The following items are services that a qualified service technician should do:

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning operates on the same principles as a refrigerator. All air conditioners consist of a condenser unit, which sits outside the house and serves to condense the circulating refrigerant, thus releasing the captured heat to the outside. The actual equipment that accomplishes the “conditioning” of indoor air comes in several forms, depending on the type of distribution system in the home.

Dehumidifiers

Dehumidifiers have a bucket or pan that can be periodically emptied. Most have an automatic shut-off when the container is full. Relative humidity (RH) is the amount of water vapor actually present in the air compared to the greatest amount of water vapor the air can hold at that temperature. Many dehumidifiers include a built-in humidistat
